WHICH mainstream news source does the public routinely turn to during moments of triumph or scandal for the nation? According to the latest survey conducted by AGB Nielsen of the viewing preferences in Mega Manila homes, the answer to that question would again be GMA, specifically its flagship news program 24 Oras.
As the Mamasapano debacle continued to grip the nation, and calls for President Aquino’s resignation grew louder, the prime-time newscast anchored by the multiawarded triumvirate of Mike Enriquez, Vicky Morales and Mel Tiangco became the most-watched prime-time program—and not even the maudlin developments in the soap opera landscape could displace 24 Oras from its lofty perch.
That said, GMA’s Empress Ki continued its solid showing, pulling in exceptional numbers despite airing at the tail-end of the prime-time block. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN’s Dream Dad appears to have been revivified, with the Zanjo Marudo-led soap battling its way back to the top 4 in the prime-time race.
