THE possible entry of a third player in the country’s information communications technology (ICT) sector is going to be a big business opportunity for backup and recovery solutions provider Veritas Technologies Llc.
Vic Ciencia, director for Technical Sales and Services, Presales Division of Veritas-Asia South region, said the Mountain View, California-based company, is quite bullish on the prospect because the Philippines is one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, specifically the Association of Southeast Asean area.
“If that [Asean Economic Community] pushes through, it would be a great opportunity us,” Ciencia said in an interview at the sidelines of an event reintroducing Veritas in the Philippines.
With its “divorce” with Symantec Corp. formalized last year, Ciencia said Veritas could now “give more focus in its core competency, such as security and data recovery.”
In a statement, Veritas CEO Bill Coleman said data will be the most critical asset in the 21st century. With ICT expected to experience huge growth, Coleman said the role of information-management companies will be more important “to help our clients protect and take advantage of information to drive business success and stay competitive.”
Coleman added that the company is “well positioned to innovate and deliver the benefits of information management.” He said they “will give a closer look on solving the organizations’ exponentially-growing data challenges to avoid an information crisis,” with particular emphasis on backup and data recovery.
These solutions also include business continuity, storage management and information governance.
Veritas Asia South region Managing Director Victor Cheng said the company recognizes the potential of the Philippine market. Cheng said Veritas will deliver software and services to help clients collect, protect, analyze and optimize their data, “so organizations can make smarter decisions, manage risk and minimize expense growth.”
The company will rely on the expertise of reseller Wordtext Systems Inc. (WSI) to help Veritas’s backup and data-recovery solutions, Cheng said during the Philippine launch of the Veritas-WSI partnership on February 16 in Makati City.
“WSI has been supporting Veritas for the last 15 years as it had been previously branded under Symantec,” WSI President Juan G. Chua said in a statement. “Now that the company has spun off to focus on offering backup and data-recovery solutions, we will continue to work with Veritas and our partner resellers to bring these information management solutions to the local market.”
The reintroduction of Veritas in the Philippines came two days after the International Data Corp. (IDC) said findings from its recent information-technology services end-user survey reveal business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) services as among the top 3 themes for ICT services spending in the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) or APeJ region. The other two themes are security enhancement and IT staff retention and training.
“A comparison of two years’ results on the top themes for IT services spend shows that APeJ organizations have moved beyond the infrastructure consolidation phase to focus on improving reliability, security and resilience of the enterprise infrastructure and systems in order to be better prepared for the digital transformation wave,” IDC quoted its Research Manager Cathy Huang as saying.
