Damage caused by typhoons in the last quarter of the year affected the country’s agricultural productivity in 2016, declining total output by 1.41 percent year-on-year, according to the latest report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The report, titled “Performance of Philippine Agriculture, October-December 2016,” also showed that the sector contracted by 1.1 percent from October to December last year.
“The devastating effects of Typhoons “Karen” and “Lawin” pulled down production in the crops and fisheries subsectors,” the PSA said in its report titled “Performance of Philippine Agriculture October-December 2016”.
The crops subsector, which accounted for the half or 50.98 percent of total agricultural output, declined by 3.32 percent year-on-year.
The fisheries subsector recorded a 4.18 percent decline in production in 2016, the highest among all the other subsectors, the PSA said.
Meanwhile, the livestock and poultry subsectors posted growth in output last year. The livestock and poultry subsectors expanded by 4.59 percent and 1.39 percent respectively.
