EARLY last year, Volkswagen fanatics were delighted when the high-performance Golf GTi model made its debut in the country.
In a very exhilarating fashion, the motoring media got to experience bits of its driving capabilities, leaving everyone in awe. This time, Volkswagen Philippines brought in two more exciting alternatives coinciding with the badge’s 42nd year commemoration. The Highline and Comfortline variants will join their sporty sibling, which will expand the option for the multiawarded hatch.
“This year Volkswagen Philippines increases the product lineup of the Golf brand. And tonight, you get the first look at the two other variants—the Golf Highline 1.4 TSI DSG and the Golf Comfortline 1.4 TSI DSG. Now, we have an expanded range of the fun-to-drive, multiaward-winning Golf. As you know, the Golf is a two-time winner of the European Car of the Year and also the Car of the Year in Japan in 2013-2014,” said John Phillip “JP” Orbeta, Volkswagen Philippines president and CEO.
Exterior-wise, the new versions still embody the stylish frame with sleek profiles, only minus the GTi version’s add-on aesthetics, including the polished twin-exhaust pipes. The front grille’s straight-line accent expanding to the headlamps is now chromed, along with the new designed bumper blended with matte black shades. Those keen-looking Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRL), dynamic range adjustment, dynamic cornering lights and auto headlight activation with separate DRL are exclusive to the Highline edition. But the 17 inch multi-spoked alloy wheels with 225/45 series tires are standard.
Conservative, yet elegant, interior layout boasts of a brushed-aluminum metal trim emphasizing the instrumentation panel, center console, dashboard and even the door latches. While the Highline version is highlighted with the Vienna leather seats and a Climatronic two-zone air-conditioning system with rear A/C vent, as well as the 5.8- inch color touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and telephony functions.
Powering both the Highline and Comfortline variants is a 1.4-liter TSI (Turbocharged with Stratified Injection) petrol-engine producing 148 hp at 5,000 rpm and 250 N-m of torque at 1,500 rpm.
This is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) that helps provide efficiency and seamless shifting whether in full auto or manual mode. Just like the GTi option, achieving maximum torque early on in the RPM range will theoretically put these two new Golf models at ease when driving uphill, hauling heavy loads and overtaking.
Also, noteworthy is the available XDS feature—an extension of the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), which assists in improving traction on critical surfaces and reducing the tendency to understeer by applying pressure from the ESP hydraulics to the inner wheel when cornering fast.
Aside from the usual safety features, customary to both versions are a handful of state-of-the-art elements and driver-assist functions. One is the Proactive Occupant Protection System that automatically tightens the seat belts and closes the windows to ensure maximum functionality of the multiair-bag system in the event of a potential accident. There are also the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) with Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), and Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR) that altogether detect dangerous driving conditions and take actions to keep the vehicle in total control every time.
Another safety feature is the eight-channel park distance control that not only helps in maneuvering but also informs the driver about the distance from the obstacles. Last, the advanced Anti-Theft system with interior monitoring and safety lock that engages audible and visual warning signals to attract attention and deter potential thieves.
“The two Golf variants that will be joining the GTI come at more accessible price points. Despite their smaller engines that still pack a punch, the cars themselves offer the same level of ride and drive confidence the Golf has been known for since it first rolled out of the assembly lines in Germany in 1974,” Orbeta added.
The Golf Highline 1.4 TSI DSG is priced at P1.739 million, while the Golf Comfortline 1.4 TSI DSG at P1.590 million. Both models are available in Pure White, Sunset Red Metallic, Limestone Gray and Deep Black Pearl. The Pacific Blue color is exclusively available for the Golf Comfortline.
