FOR ordinary car clubs, a typical fun run is just about similar-minded people with their beloved model cars getting together on a weekend for fun and camaraderie.
For participants of the recent Sixth JSK Auto Fun Run, however, “usual” was just not ordinarily what they had in mind. The extraordinary affair was meant to break records, enthrall people with impressive raffle prizes while lending a hand to the less fortunate.
“First of all, I’d like to acknowledge all the car clubs that, from year one until today, have never stopped supporting us,” said an elated Johnson Tan, founder and organizer of the JSK Auto Fun Run during an interview.
“Dito, nagsasama-sama tayo, nagsasalo-salo hindi lang para maka-break ng record, pero para makatulong kahit sa ating maliit na paraan,” he added.
The record
The event, which gathered 1,182 vehicles, broke a previous record number of 1,059 established last year—setting a new achievement of the longest vehicle convoy, which took off from SM North Edsa parking area in Quezon City at exactly 9 a.m en route toward Fontana Hot Spring Leisure Parks Convention Center in Clark Airbase, Pampanga. The very first auto fun run saw 70 participants driving vehicles of various makes and models from Valenzuela City to Subic. In previous editions, 180 vehicles participated in 2012, which then grew to more than 300 vehicles in 2013 and more than 500 vehicles in 2014.
“One of the reasons we’re supporting this advocacy is that we would like to be part of the Guinness Book of World Records,” Solar Transport and Automotive Resources Corp. Managing Director Mark Tieng stated.
The prize
Aside from the record, Tieng also pledged support through giving away a sporty brand-new modified BYD F0.
“Last year we gave away a brand-new F0, this time we’ll also do the same and for this edition, we’re giving away a modified one with body kits, sound system, exhaust, the works.”
“I believe the JSK group is a big network of true car enthusiasts. We want them to know and understand what BYD is,” he added.
Over 2,000 guests were treated to other prizes, like entrainment systems and trips to the US. Not to mention another vehicle being drawn, which totals to two raffled cars. Other amusements, like games, live bands, dance intermissions and beauty contests also enlivened their interests.
The cause
“For several years now, we have always been a great advocate of Reach Out World Wide Foundation—the same beneficiary supported by the late action star Paul Walker, who starred in the immensely popular Fast and Furious movie series,” stated Tan.
“But, aside from this, we are also supporting a man whom I met in a previous car show. May anak siya na may kidney cancer, so part of the proceeds will go to his son’s treatment” he continued.
Last year about P2 million monetary fund was collected from the annual event, which amounted from registration fees alone. With a bigger turnout for 2016, a larger sum can be allocated to those in need.
“I like what they are doing. I belong to a car club and ever since the day this started, we already always get to look forward to it every year,” expressed Apple Bautista, Honda Brio Club Philippines secretary.
“Not only do you get to have fun with friends and break records, you also get to help people,” she added.
Truly, it is moments like these in life that take your breath away—and the good thing about it is that one gets to share it with others who have the same passion and love for cars.
