UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) swept its matches on Monday to advance to the women’s and men’s semifinals in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines beach volleyball tournament at the Sands SM By The Bay.
Fan favorite Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez downed Roma Doromal and Aiko Urdas of National University, 21-18, 21-16, to extend UST’s perfect run to five games in the women’s division.
KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto, on the other hand, also kept the Growling Tigers unbeaten in five matches following a 21-15, 21-14 decision over Bryan Bagunas and Fauzi Ismail of the Bulldogs.
The UST teams only need to win their last two matches to complete a seven-game sweep of the elimination round.
Far Eastern University’s Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza also moved closer to the semifinals following a 21-16, 21-8 rout of Diana Carlos and Arielle Estrañero of University of the Philippines.
The Lady Tamaraws improved to 4-1, while the Lady Maroons lost their second consecutive match after a 3-0 start.
Defending champion De La Salle, with Kim Fajardo taking over from Desiree Cheng in teaming up with Tin Tiamzon, beat Adamson University’s Jema Galanza and Bernadette Flora, 22-24, 21-16, 15-13, to go 3-2 won-lost.
