LEGACY carrier Royal Brunei Airlines Sdn Bhd has asked the air-services regulator to impose a fuel surcharge on its service in and out of the Philippines.
In a filing with the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), the foreign carrier said it intends to hike its passenger tickets by $20 for its Manila-Bandar Seri Begawan route, adding fuel surcharge to its fees.
The petition is set to be heard on October 14 at the regulator’s headquarters in Pasay City.
A fuel surcharge is a temporary relief granted to airlines to help them recover losses incurred from higher jet-fuel costs.
Fuel accounts for as much as 60 percent of an airline’s operating cost per passenger, and is the second-highest expense next to labor.
Data from the International Air Transport Association showed jet-fuel cost was at $268.7 per gallon as of September 29, down by 4.9 percent from the preceding month and 9.3 percent less than the year-ago price.
