LISBON, Portugal—Diabetes killed 12 people a day in Portugal in 2015, a report released on Wednesday said.
The report, titled “Diabetes: Facts and Numbers” from the National Observatory for Diabetes, revealed the number of newly reported diagnosis grew in 2015, with around 168 new cases of diabetes identified every day.
The illness is more prevalent in men than in women, and there is higher incidence among the elderly population. Over a quarter of people aged between 60 and 79 suffer from the disease, the report said. Rui Duarte, president of the Portuguese Diabetology Society, highlighted the numbers registered are “surprising” and confirm a growing trend in recent years.
The cost of medicines for diabetic people for the national health system more than tripled in the past 10 years, the figures from the report showed.
The rise in costs is explained through an increase of the prevalence of the condition, but also due to the number of people treated rising, as well as the doses used in treatments.
The World Health Organization said around 422 million people around the world have diabetes, and 1.5 million deaths are attributed to the disease each year.
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high levels of blood sugar, which leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes and nerves.

Good report. I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and put on Metformin on June 26th, 2016. I started the ADA diet and followed it 100% for a few weeks and could not get my blood sugar to go below 140. Finally i began to panic and called my doctor, he told me to get used to it. He said I would be on metformin my whole life and eventually insulin. At that point i knew something wasn’t right and began to do a lot of research. Then I found Lisa’s diabetes story (google ” HOW EVER I FREED MYSELF FROM THE DIABETES ” ) I read that article from end to end because everything the writer was saying made absolute sense. I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100 and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70’s and the 80’s. My doctor took me off the metformin after just three week of being on this lifestyle change. I have lost over 30 pounds and 6+ inches around my waist in a month. The truth is we can get off the drugs and help myself by trying natural methods
