NEWLY crowned Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was handed a crown made in the Czech Republic that is worth more than P14 million.
Designed and produced over a four-month period by Czech company Diamonds International Corp. (DIC), it marked the first time in the 63-year history of the pageant that the crown was created in the Czech Republic.
Made up of 311 pieces of diamonds, five pieces of blue topaz, 198 pieces of blue sapphire, 33 pieces of crystal and gold, the crown takes shape of the Manhattan skyline and its production requiring the work of 10 people.
According to DIC, the Miss Universe crown combines the tradition of Czech glassmakers and the best jewelers, cutters and polishers from their country.
To produce the Miss Universe crown, DIC had to do sketches and hand-drawn designs which had to be approved first by pageant organizers.
DIC has a 10-year contract with the Miss Universe Organization, including the right to sell an exclusive Miss Universe perfume.
The Czech company will also be responsible for the crowns that will be worn by future Miss USA and Miss Teen USA winners.
DIC was established in 2005 in the Czech Republic. It is currently agressively expanding its presence in Europe and Asia.
Aside from jewelry production, the Czech Republic is famous for its cut crystal, more commonly known as Bohemian crystal.
As a testament to their ageless elegance and beauty, large traditional Bohemian crystal chandeliers are in the Reception Hall of the Malacañan Palace, welcoming the guests of the President.
Bohemian crystal chandeliers made by Lasvit can also be found in some of the best hotels and residences in Metro Manila.
