DEFENDING champion University of Perpetual Help overpowered Letran, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20, to jump into a three-way tie for second place with College of Saint Benilde and San Beda in the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.
Esmail Kasim unloaded a team-best 11 hits, while Rey Taneo Jr. scattered 10 points to help propel the Altas to their fourth win in five outings.
Allan Jay Sala-an, team captain Manuel Doliente and John Patrick Ramos chipped in a combined 24 points to help provide the Las Piñas school more attack options.
It was Perpetual Help’s third win in a row after it fell to San Beda, 25-18, 29-27, 23-25, 27-29, 10-15, on November 20. Letran skid to 1-4 (win-loss).
“We didn’t let that loss affect us because we’re focused on making it to the Final Four,” Perpetual Help Coach Sammy Acaylar said.
In juniors’ action, reigning titlist Perpetual Help survived Letran’s upset bid with a 21-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-14 win to remain at No. 3 with a 3-1 card. Emilio Aguinaldo and Lyceum of the Philippines University lead the way with 4-0 and 3-0 records, respectively.
In women’s play, Perpetual Help edged Letran, 29-27, 25-15, 25-21, to improve to 3-2 and close in on the semifinals.
San Beda overpowered Emilio Aguinaldo College, 10-0, to share second place with Saint Benilde in seniors football action at the Rizal Memorial Football Field in Manila also on Wednesday.
Ralph Estephen Abriol scored a hat trick early, connecting in the second, fifth and 17th minutes to set the tone for the easy victory for the Red Booters, who matched the Blazers’ 12 points.
Aljo Paul Zabala and Nimrod Balabat contributed a double each, while Mark Den Castillo and Elnie Dorimon accounted for San Beda’s other goals to complete the lopsided triumph.
Reigning champion San Beda, meanwhile, waylaid Arellano University via a 3-0 sweep in a duel of unbeaten teams to seize the solo lead in the tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Vince Carlo Ramiscal downed Wilmer Sabas, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening singles and then Eric Fernandez and Andre Rodriguez turned back Romel Fortadez and William Deyro, 6-2, 6-4, in the match-clinching doubles.
Andre Tuason capped the emphatic victory with a 6-0, 6-4 dumping of Sabas in the final singles match.
It was San Beda’s sixth straight win, putting it two wins closer to sweeping first round.
Other results saw Saint Benilde edging Perpetual Help, 2-1; Jose Rizal University beating Lyceum, 3-0; and Letran defeating San Sebastian, 2-1.
