FOUR local girls carried the fight for host Ozamis City in the recent Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Tennis Championship Series leg in Misamis Occidental.
Carmeville Gervacio led the charge by beating Iligan City’s Annamae Mendoza, 6-0, 6-3, in the girls’ 18-under final. Jan Marie Anghag followed suit with a 6-0, 6-7, 10-3 win over Rovie Baulete in the 16-under championship.
Carmel Marie Padilla had an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow Ozamis City resident Zeaiha Toribio to rule the girls’ 14-under and Judy Ann Padilla completed the sweep by defeating Toribio, 6-2, 6-2, in the girls’ 12-under final.
“I am truly impressed with the level of play by these young players of Ozamis City and most of them have been campaigning regularly in our series, which has helped them develop their skills to reach this level,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier.
Cebu City’s Marc Nicole Suson continued his winning ways in the boys’ 16-under after beating Tubod’s John Steven Sonsona, 6-1, 6-2, in the final.
John Renest Sonsona engaged Pagadian City’s Nilo Ledama in a close fight before prevailing, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9, to take the 18-under crown, while relatively unknown Eric Jay Tangub of Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur, was a surprise winner in the 14-under class following his upset of Aaron Jacque Geromo, 6-1, 6-2.
Multititlied Nash Agustines of Oroquieta City edged Heinz Asian Carbonilla, 5-7, 6-4, 11-9, to win the boys’ 12-under category while Zamboanaga del Sur’s Abdel Qadzri Matarul posted a 5-3, 0-4, 4-0 triumph over Vince AJ Bering in the 10-under unisex final of the tournament supported by Dunlop.
Matarul and Garlandson Ardiante won the unisex doubles title after beating Bering and Kale Cyd Villamar, 5-4, 4-2, while Tangub partnered with Lex Estillore in defeating Brent Signmond Cortes and Ashton Benne Villanueva by retirerment in the boys’ 14-under class.
