THE number of barangays nationwide remained unchanged in 2015, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported.
The PSA said there are a total of 42,029 barangays nationwide as of March 31, 2015, the same number was reported in December 31, 2014.
“For the first quarter of 2015, the total number of barangays remains at 42,029,” the PSA said. “There are no other updates in terms of newly created, transferred, and merged in the country’s geographical-political subdivisions.”
The three regions with the most number of barangays are Eastern Visayas with 4,390 barangays; followed by Western Visayas with 4,051 barangays; and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), 4,011 barangays.
The three regions with the least number of barangays are Davao with 1,162 barangays; Cordillera Administrative Region, 1,176; and Central Mindanao, 1,195.
The province with the most number of barangays are Iloilo with 1,721 barangays; Leyte, 1,503 barangays; and Pangasinan, 1,364 barangays.
The towns or cities with the least number of barangays are Muntinlupa with only nine; followed by Pateros, 10; and Navotas, 14 barangays.
The compilation of the data is a collaborative effort of the
Commission on Elections (Comelec), National Barangay Operations Office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, National Mapping and Resource Information Authority, and the PSA.
Pursuant to Republic Act 10625, the PSA is mandated to prescribe uniform standards and classification systems in government statistics and in the generation of official statistics to ensure harmonization and comparability of statistics in the country and at the international level.
The PSA shall continually formulate statistical standards, such as definitions of statistical terms and concepts used in official statistics, and, likewise, develop classification systems for adoption by government agencies.
