MISAMIS ORIENTAL—The province of Misamis Oriental has appropriated P3.6 million for the development of “demonstration farms” in the province, a provincial board member said on Monday.
Provincial Board Member Benefict Lagbas, chairman of the provincial board’s committee on agriculture, said each of the province’s 22 towns and the component cities of El Salvador and Gingoog will have “demo farm.”
Except for Gingoog City which allocated a 4-hectare farm site, a 2-hectare farm lot would be developed in each of the municipal towns, as propagation site of various plant seedlings for the farmers, Lagbas said.
At present, the demo farms would propagate the cavendish bananas (lakatan) since the province could not cope with the demands of bananas of lakatan variety, Lagbas said. The demo farms would also serve as a tissue culture center in the propagation of the lakatan seedlings to enable farmers to plant the variety in their private lots, he said.
Lagbas said the farmers would undergo training at the Department of Agriculture’s research center in Bukidnon prior to the start of the demo farm project in June this year.
