THE other day I met up with former colleague and now President and Founder of the Sports Management Council of the Philippines (SMCP) Dina Bernardo. The SMCP will be having its first three-day academic sporting event from November 18 to 20 at the Celebrity Sports Plaza at Capitol Hills Drive in Quezon City.
The conference will be a gathering of Physical Education (PE) teachers, coaches, instructors, trainers, managers, students, athletes and sports aficionados and advocates. The conference is looking to emphasize and highlight the importance of student development through games, play and physical fitness and activity.
The 2016 International Conference on Sport Pedagogy, Health and Wellness (ICSPHW 2016) will feature lectures and teachings from sport scholars from here and abroad. Almost 900 participants are expected to be in attendance in an unprecedented exchange of information and best practices in student development through games, play and physical activity.
The theme for this first-ever three-day international sports conference will be “PE Plus: Retooling Physical Education and School Sports for Inclusion, Development and Competition,”
According to Bernardo, organizing and managing sports events and conferences is part and parcel of sports management and that the physical development of a student must be holistic. PE means Physical Education, so the student must not only be active in sports and physical activity but the student must also be educated by it, hence, the education part in the acronym P.E.
What is sports management? Is it the same as business management or legal management? According to a sports web site “Sport management is an industrious field concerning the business aspects of sports and recreation. Some examples of sport managers include the front office system in professional sports, college sports managers, recreational sport managers, sports marketing, event management, facility management, sports economics, sport finance and sports information.”
The 2016 ICSPHW is strongly recommended by the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education and the Asian Council of Exercise and Sports Science.
Early birds to the affair will be offered special rates. Ticket prices are P4,500 for local participants and P3,000 for undergraduates.
