Most women I know would go for a matte lipstick than one with a bit of shine. I asked some of them why.
“I love the matte look to bits because it gives you a sexy and glamorous look. It’s like getting a mini facelift,” says Kristine Mutia, a law graduate.
To achieve the perfect matte lip, Kristine follows the following steps: she applies the lipstick (usually a MAC red), blots with tissue or dabs her lips with a bit of powder and finally applies more lipstick.
Rae Ocampo, who blogs at www.scatterbraintures.com, also goes for matte lipsticks.
“I like matte lipsticks because almost all of them are opaque. They don’t make me look like I’m drooling and they generally last longer.”
Another reason Rae likes matte lipsticks is they balance the shine of her skin.
I love the texture of matte lipsticks but I cannot wear them all the time because no matter how much I moisturize and exfoliate, my lips will die. But I still love my mattes and no one does matte better than MAC.
In August MAC is releasing a collection, dubbed “The Matte Lip,” consisting of 22 lipsticks, all of them matte, of course. Of the 22, 12 are already existing shades including the iconic Ruby Woo and other popular mattes like Studded Kiss, Pink Pigeon and Please Me. Six of the 12 are Retro Mattes, which is MAC’s most unforgiving texture (this, however, is the world’s most matte lipstick and every shade is fabulous).
The new shades are interesting. There is Stone, a muted grayish taupe brown. Why any woman would want gray lips is beyond me but there are some who actually do. Matte Royal is a deep blue while Men Love Mystery is a lavender violet.
D for Danger is a brick red, Tropic Tonic is a coral, and Persistence is a peachy cinnamon.
The most interesting shade for me is Whirl, a dirty rose. I am not sure if this matches the lip liner of the same name which became popular because Kylie Jenner reportedly used it to create her signature nude lip. But I am sure this will be a bestseller because of that association.
Note: This is the shade I’m getting.
If you are doing a matte lip, make sure to exfoliate your lips (I use a scrub from Lush) and moisturize (Kiehl’s Lip Balm works) before applying the color.
What I do is to “rest” my lips in between matte lipsticks so they don’t become too dry.
This usually works.
