Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Lloyd Dino is appealing to local government units (LGUs) to be business-friendly and avoid harassing foreign investors.
Dino made the appeal during the Visayas leg of the Economic Zone Summit, conducted by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza).
In his speech, Dino said the third point in the Duterte administration’s 10-point socioeconomic agenda is to “increase competitiveness and improve the ease of doing business”.
He said efforts to make this succeed will draw upon successful models used to attract business to progressive cities that lure foreign- direct investment.
“I urged you to take note of this third point and emphasize the term ‘competitiveness’ of doing business. This can only be realized if we have a friendly local government, a local government unit that will veer away from long queues of taxpayers transacting business, a local government unit that has no official fixers who collect 10-percent kickback in business transactions, an LGU that releases business permits in three days, without the hassle of red tape,” Dino said.
Dino has invited all LGUs to help the Duterte administration establish business-friendly environment, avoid arm-twisting and harassing business locators and economic players because they are our partners for growth and development.
“I assure you of my office’s full support. Please do not hesitate to come to my office whenever you have any problem with any government office or LGU, and I will show you how this administration deals with grafters,” Dino said.
Peza is conducting a series of summits across the country to prepare a nationwide economic zone map.
The Economic Zone Summit was held in Mindanao last week, which was attended by 300 participants, mostly land owners, developers, investors and officials from the LGUs.
The next and the last leg of the Economic Zone Summit will be in Luzon.
The summit seeks to identify potential economic zones in all regions of the country. The nationwide economic-zone map aims to provide investors various choices of locations where they can put up their investments in the country.
There will be three classifications of economic zones under Peza: the existing public and private economic zones; the newly approved economic zones; and the incoming economic zones identified during the summits.
