IS Aldin Ayo transferring to De La Salle?
A day after Juno Sauler tendered his resignation, a source told the BusinessMirror on Wednesday that the champion Letran mentor is the leading candidate to become the new head coach of the Green Archers.
Ayo led the Knights to a crown in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) against San Beda College, ending the Red Lions’ reign for the past five years.
His impressive run with Letran has impressed La Salle officials, including patron Danding Cojuangco, and the source added that Ayo has the edge over the other candidates, including former mentor Franz Pumaren and Sauler’s assistant Siot Tanquingcen.
If the Sorsogon native gets the position, it will be the first time in a long while that the Green Archers will be handled by an “outsider.” The 38-year-old Ayo also played for the Knights in the NCAA during the 1990s.
The school is known for hiring their alumni to call the shots of its men’s basketball team.
La Salle missed the Final Four of Season 78 University Athletic Association of the Philippines, a first for Sauler who guided the team to a crown in Season 76. It was also the first time since 2011 that the Taft-based team missed the semifinals of the UAAP.
In a statement on Tuesday, the school has formed a search committee to look for Sauler’s replacement and it seemed that La Salle has found their guy in Ayo.
