FOR a Chinese-manufactured compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV), the BYD S6 2.4L DCT transcends the perception of mediocracy to exceeded expectations. The solid design with advance technological features puts it at par with the competition.
At first glance, it closely resembles an RX 350 with dimensions that make it relatively bigger in its class. The fascia radiates with projector-type halogen headlamps, fog lamps and chrome grille, while the rear draws attention to the illuminated BYD emblem. Unlocking is convenient with the smart key system, which retracts the side mirrors with light-emitting diode (LED) welcome light—an essential element in obscure areas. Expansive is the impression upon seeing the five-seater cabin. The cockpit layout highlights a modern flair with controls embedded in the steering wheel, with the ignition start/stop button and integrated multimedia system in the center console.
Leather-wrapped seats with multiple controls are luxurious and comfortable. Firing up the engine enables the TFT-LED instrument panel with a vivid display that makes it appealing and informative.
Parking in reverse is a walk in the park, thanks to the in-car 7-inch screen display from the rear built-in camera with markings for distance and alignment.
On the road, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine demonstrated various dynamics depending on driving conditions. Considering the S6’s massive size and 225/65 tire series mounted on 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, acceleration was a bit of a challenge on ascents.
There was a need to push the engine up to its midrange in order to get the desired torque.
This was where the manual mode of the six-speed automatic with dual-clutch transmission became vital.
On the other hand, cruising on level roads and highways was effortless. Notable aspects of fuel efficiency are the low engine speed in the final gear and the ECO switch button that enables shifting in advance.
Operating the engine’s drive-by-wire throttle compels a moderate press on the gas pedal in order to feel that harmonious transmission operation. Even with the combination of front MacPherson struts and the rear independent suspension, the ride leaned toward stiffness. Consequently, there was minimal body roll on turns and curves, creating satisfactory steering feedback. The road noise and vibration insulation was impressive as it created bliss in listening to music via the touchscreen audio head unit. Extreme humidity empowered the dual zone air-conditioner with climate control to supply a chilly ambiance.
At one point, when the exterior environment was cooler, both air vents emitted hot and cold air to achieve the pre-set interior temperature. What made it more fascinating was the dual-mode sun/moon roof for natural light during daytime and stargazing at night.
The rearview mirror has a built-in digital compass and a dimming switch to reduce glare emanating from the headlights of vehicles behind you.
The brakes produced positive feedback from the pedal due to the controlled amount of force transmitted to maximize the stopping power. Aside from Electronic Brake force Distribution and Anti-lock Brake System, other reliable safety features are six air bags (dual front, side and curtain), side impact beams, parking radars and seat-belt reminder.
Given the size of the S6, the spacious rear cabin can accommodate sizable loads. Folding the rear seats instantly provides 2,400 liters of boot space. Additional compartments are available underneath the covers with the basic tools arranged in specific slots. With full options on amenities, security and technological characteristics comparable to a full-sized SUV, the BYD S6 2.4 DCT not only surpassed my expectations but convinced me that this Chinese SUV is closing the gap to its Japanese and South Korean counterparts.
