UK envoy to PHL: Speed up trade reforms

THE British government urged the Philippine government to speed up trade reforms, particularly bureaucratic red tape, to take advantage of the increasing interests from British firms that are eager to take part in the government’s public-private partnership (PPP) projects.

British Ambassador to the Philippines Stephen Lillie said the clear assets of the Philippines “remains on its work pool,” or the large number of human resource with good English communication skills, high educational attainment and positive values.

Lillie said there is indeed a good environment for business in the Philippines and such is bringing “excitement and significant interests” among British private firms that are looking at investments in Southeast Asia.

“There are interests in the business of services that include financial and legal support services and other business-process outsourcing, as well as PPP projects,” said Lillie in an interview at the launch of the ITRS Group at the Makati Shangri-La.

Lillie joined officials of British company ITRS Group in the recent launch of the Manila development center.

The firm is a global provider of predictive, real-time monitoring and proactive application performance management products to the world’s financial community.

He said PPP projects are very much needed by the Philippines to expand infrastructure and make efficient services.

“But there remain some areas of concern in terms of bureaucracy, particularly the speed and ease of setting up business in this country,” Lillie stressed.

He said the British government supports the Aquino administration in its continuing fight against corruption.
