The 18-year-old Patrombon, who is honing for the 26th Southeast Asian Games that start next week, beat Korea’s Jun Woong-Sun, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), which according to head coach Manny Tecson gave his ward his seventh Association of Tennis Professional point this year.
The Filipino-Italian Reyes also dropped the opening set against local bet Pruchya Isarow but came back strong in the last two sets to score a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory for his second ATP point for the year.
Patrombon also came from a three-set win over Hong Kong’s Lam Wing-Lu, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, in the qualifying round, while Reyes dominated Brunei’s Mohd Aiman Abdullah, 6-1,6-2.
Tecson said Jun, once ranked No. 4 in the world juniors, was a monster in the baseline, forcing Patrombon to drop the first set.
“In the second set, Jeson started returning consistently and more aggressively to put pressure on Jun,” said Tecson.
Reyes would play either No. 7 Arata Onaza of Japan or Gajjar Rohan of India in the next round on Wednesday.
“High-ranking Koreans, Japanese, French and other Europeans are playing here which makes it a good tournament for us in our preparations for the SEA Games,” said Tecson.
