SAN Beda College hardly broke a sweat in beating University of Perpetual Help, 69-55, to get back into the winning track in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament on Monday at the Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions, who absorbed their first loss, 68-70, against the San Sebastian Stags that broke their 26-game winning run dating back to two years ago, posted their ninth win in 10 games to stay at second spot. The Altas dropped to 1-9.

Kyle Pascual led San Beda with 15 points, Jake Pascual added 13 and eight rebounds and Rome de la Rosa had 13, while combining for 16 points in the last quarter to easily clinch the win.

The Red Lions finished off the Altas behind an 8-0 run, six from Jake Pascual, that gave them a sizable 13-point spread, 57-44.

“We are still recovering from our bruises. This is a good win for us,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.

In the juniors division, Van Abatayo had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the San Beda Red Cubs to a 113-68 rout of the Perpetual Help Altalets.

Boden Miranda and Arvin Tolentino added 14 points apiece for the Red Cubs, who clinched their 10th consecutive win.

Perpetual, Benilde advance

REIGNING champion Perpetual Help and College of St. Benilde scored crucial wins over the weekend to advance to the semifinals of the women’s beach volleyball at the La Salle Greenhills sand courts in San Juan.

Lady Altas April Ann Sartin and Norie Diaz turned back Joanna Clemente and Marjanette Echano of Jose Rizal University, 21-18, 21-13, to improve its win-loss mark to 7-1.

The Lady Blazers, meanwhile, posted the same record, as Jannine Navarro and Rossan Fajardo defeated Mary Jane Ticar and Jeanilyn Lunar of Arellano University, 21-15, 21-16.

With the win, the Lady Altas and the Lady Blazers joined early semifinalist Letran.

The Letran team of Gena Andaya and Manel Carolino earlier outlasted Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Sharmaine Belleza and Carmille Lorenzo, 21-19, 21-17, to stay unbeaten in eight matches.

San Beda College’s Coline Malana and Janine Marciano also won, beating Mapua’s Patricia Aquino and Kay Bacit, 21-9, 21-10, to stay in contention for a semifinal berth at 4-4 in a tie with the Arellano Lady Chiefs.

Bea Uy and Karen Berbano of San Sebastian College downed Tin Cassanova and Rosalaida Lualhati of Lyceum, 21-17, 21-15, to improve to 3-5.
