THERE will be no changes in the composition of the Philippine Davis Cup team when it faces Pakistan in the Asia/Oceania Group II second-round match at the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) tennis courts.

Philippine Lawn Tennis Association (Philta) Davis Cup coordinator Randy Villanueva said Cecil Mamiit, Treat Conrad Huey, Francis Casey Alcantara and Patrick John Tierro, the same players who beat Hong Kong in a first-round match in March, will again make up the team.

The 32-year-old Mamiit won two singles and one doubles matches in the rain-marred tie against Hong Kong.

Huey, 23, is in his second tie for the Philippines. He was 1-1 against Hong Kong—he lost his singles assignment but teamed up with Mamiit for the doubles victory.

The 17-year-old Alcantara, who made an early exit in the singles and doubles competition of the Wimbledon juniors tournament, eyes another fruitful stint after winning his first Davis Cup match against Hong Kong.

Tierro, who secured a Davis Cup slot during the Metro Open tennis championship in February, will also provide stability to the team.

According to Villanueva, Mamiit is now in the country after making it to the quarterfinals of a Malaysian International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament, while Huey will arrive on Friday night after an ITF tournament in California where he reached the quarterfinals.

Villanueva said the Philippines has a slight edge over Pakistan.

“We are at home and we are playing on clay, which is what the players want,” said Villanueva.

Pakistan will be fielding Aisam Qureshi, Ageel Khan, Jalil Khan and Yasir Khan.

Qureshi and Ageel Khan led Pakistan to a 4-1 win over Oman in their first-round encounter. The winner will face either Indonesia or New Zealand in September for a slot in Group I.
