THE Philippine senior league (14 to 16 years old) baseball team ruled the Asia-Pacific regionals after beating Guam, 6-5, on Sunday. The Filipino youngsters thus advanced to the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine, in the USA. First baseman Julian Miguel Esteban Habana’s double was transformed into two runs for the team, represented by a squad from International Little League Association of Manila (Illam), that highlighted a four-run seventh and final inning for the walk-off victory. Adriane Bernardo also starred in that final-inning explosion with an RBI (runs-batted-in) single and so did Charles Catangui with his own RBI. The Filipinos scored two runs early in the first inning but Guam fought back and tied the game in the third frame. Guam looked headed to victory after clustering three runs in the sixth inning. The Filipinos were the underdogs in the match with their 2-1 elimination-round win-loss card that included a loss to Guam, the favorites with a clean 3-0 record entering the finals. The World Series are set from August 16 to 22. In the junior league (13 to 14), the Philippines, represented by Muntinlupa, meanwhile, lost its semifinals match to CNMI, 21-18, while the big-league squad (16 to 18) from Tanauan City also lost a CNMI crew, 7-4, also in the semifinal round.
