A BROADCASTER for a local radio station in Camarines Sur was shot and killed by still-unidentified armed men on Monday, the police said.
Romeo Olea, 49, reporter and broadcaster of radio station dwEB in Nabua, Camarines Sur, was shot at about 5:25 a.m. while onboard his motorcycle, Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., National Police spokesman, said.
The attack happened in front of the Holy Child Learning Center in barangay San Jose, Iriga City, Camarines Sur.
Cruz said Olea sustained two gunshot wounds in the back and was taken to the Rinconada Medical Center, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigators found at the crime scene two spent shells from a 9mm pistol.
Olea was on his way to the radio station for his 6 a.m. news program when the incident happened.
Olea has been a broadcaster for almost 20 years and was also a correspondent of the local tabloid Bicol Mail based in Naga City. He left behind a wife and three children, all boys, who are in high school and college.
Olea’s wife Raquel is one of the Iriga police’s radio operators.
A resident of barangay San Miguel, Iriga City, told investigators that Olea was negotiating the diversion road going to Nabua town, where the radio station was located, when the assailant fired at him in close range.
Chief Supt. Cecilio Calleja, Bicol police commander, immediately activated Task Group Olea to go after the assailants and ordered the manhunt of the suspects and find out the mastermind of the killing.
