MARICRIS FERNANDEZ-GENTZ won her comeback match in a major local tournament on Wednesday, scoring an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Yoko Naito of Japan in the Holcim-International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s Tournament Week One at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. Fernandez-Gentz, in her first match in the Philippines since coming out of retirement, dispatched the 20-year-old Japanese qualifier in one hour and four minutes. The country’s hopes now rest on the 30-year-old former champion after Riza Zalameda bowed to fourth-ranked Mi Yoo of Korea, 6-3, 6-1. |
