TWO congressmen representing the farm sector are calling for suspending the construction of giant dams, and proposed instead the study of alternatives for the supply of potable and irrigation water, and power sources.

In House Resolution 1461, Paty-list Reps. Leonila Chavez and Agapito Guanlao of Butil said giant dams are “a clear and present danger to lives and property during the rainy season, as proven during the onslaught of recent typhoons.”

DAVAO CITY—A power outage hit the southeastern and southwestern Mindanao on Monday afternoon, and the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said it was yet to determine the cause.

The NGCP said the partial blackout began at 2:33 p.m., Bambi Capulong, NGCP communications officer, said restoration process was immediately done.

THE Cebu City government is looking at implementing its first bus rapid transport (BRT) by 2013 at the earliest, with three feasibility studies simultaneously held for the adoption of this mass-transport system, the first in the country.

City planning officer Nigel Paul Villarete said international financing institutions have expressed interest in funding the feasibility studies as well as the full implementation of the BRT, which is considered one of many ways to curb carbon emissions of vehicles in the streets.
