I recently spoke at the Magazine Publishers of America’s Magazine Innovation Summit in New York. During my remarks, I made the point that the forces at work in the hard-hit magazine business—increased competition, rapidly shifting technologies and emerging disruptive business models—are the same forces that are reshaping many parts of the global economy. In other words, the challenges of the magazine industry are the challenges of industry, period.

First of 2 parts NEOLIBERALISM is a perspective that champions the market as the prime regulator of economic activity and seeks to limit the intervention of the state in economic life to a minimum. In recent times it has become identified with economics, given its hegemony as a paradigm within the discipline, that is, its excluding other perspectives as legitimate ways of doing economics.

IN a single day, October 23, Metro Cebu suffered sporadic brownouts for close to 12 hours, “rotated” to different feeders by the local distribution utility to spread out the damage. That Friday was just one of many, increasingly recurring days this year when most of the Visayas run short of its needed power, a problem predicted years ago but has not yet quite been prepared for.
