ORMOC CITY—Sugar planters in this part of the country have expressed their commitment to end child labor in their industry as contained in a resolution passed by members of Ormoc-Kananga Mill District Development Council Foundation Inc. (MDDCFI).

The resolution resolved to provide assistance in the implementation of Republic Act 9231, or the anti-child labor law. MDDCFI is a grassroots level organization in Ormoc and neighboring Kananga town that was created in response to Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Administrative Order 3-91.

Composed of representatives from sugar-cane planters associations and coops, Hideco Sugar Milling Corp., Philippine Sugar Research Institute Foundation Inc. and SRA, the council serves as channel in addressing all issues pertaining to sugar-cane production.

Council chairman Roy Bernard C. Fiel said that since the sugar industry is perceived to be a possible area where children may be employed, MDDCFI desires to participate in implementing the law by imposing sanctions on their erring farmers. They also resolved to suspend services and assistance to farmers found guilty of violating RA 9231.

The action taken by the sugar planters came after the Department of Labor and Employment conducted an advocacy-orientation program on the anti-child labor Law before the District Tripartite Council and MDDCFI during the 9th MDDCFI Seminar in December 2011.”

DOLE Regional Director Exequiel Sarcauga welcomed this development and expressed optimism that with the strong partnership among the planters group, child labor in the sugar industry may be eliminated thus, achieving the government’s vision of a child labor-free Philippines.

“We would like to commend MDDCFI for taking a bold step to address child labor in the sugar industry, but our work does not stop there. We need stronger action and shared commitment if we want to remove children from hazardous forms of employment.” He added that DOLE has been vigorously implementing the anti-child labor law through sustained advocacy, surveillance and rescue operations, and livelihood interventions, all of which are aimed at eliminating child labor.
