wi-tribe Telecoms Inc., a partnership between San Miguel Corp.n (SMC)  and Qatar Telecom (Qtel), is upgrading the speed of internet service offered to its subscribers.

The move is meant to capture a larger share of the broadband market by attracting more subscribers and keeping those that already subscribed to  wi-tribe’s Internet services.

The company, in a statement, said it offers 4G Internet at 1 megabyte per second (Mbps) for P598 per month, 2Mbps for P998 and 4Mbps for P1,998, faster and less costly than any other offer in the market. In a bid to get a bigger slice of the market, wi-tribe is also ramping up its product line, offering double the speed offerings of other service providers.

It said it is in the process of upgrading the speed of the Internet service of its existing subscribers. Wi-tribe has already ramped up the Internet service provided to 30 percent of their customers. By the end of the month, all its existing subscribers will be experiencing double the speed of their existing plans.

wi-tribe’s late entry in the local Internet service business has actually served as an advantage because it gave it the opportunity to invest in the latest technology available. Players who came earlier have already invested in older technologies and will have to invest more heavily if they are to upgrade their entire service to pure 4G.

4G technology uses radio spectrum that allows for more data transfer in a given bandwidth than any 3G equipment or device. With more data transfer at a given speed, 4G network service providers can lower their costs and ultimately bring down the price to their customers.
