COTABATO CITY—Some 66,000 residents from 14 of the 26 villages in this city have been displaced by flood following heavy downpour for the last five days.

Cherry Veloria, supervising administrative officer of the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development Services, said they have already identified 16 evacuation centers, like schools, gymnasiums and basketball courts, but expressed fears of more evacuation in the coming days as heavy downpours continue.

In some low-lying villages near the supermarket area, as well as Datu Liwa Candao village, bancas for hire have become the mode of transportation, taking the routes once plied by jeepneys and pedicabs.

“Umabot na ang baha sa mega market. Papalaki pa ang tubig,” said Sam Mundas, the city’s market supervisor.

Veloria, expressing her thanks for the relief goods donated by various organizations, said her office has already served some evacuation areas, yet was worried that the supplies may soon run short.

Mundas, on the other hand, expressed fear of a possible outbreak of illness brought about by the flooding. “Some areas stinks,” he said while emphasizing the need for the health offices in the city and in Central Mindanao to “try to be pro-active” in preventing any outbreak.
