THE desktop personal computer (PC) will still be relevant device despite the emergence of mobile devices such as the smartphones, tablets, laptops and netbooks because these are part of the convergence process, technology powerhouse Lenovo said.

In an interview with the BusinessMirror, Francis Ivan Judan, Lenovo Philippines’ Distributor Channels Manager, said PCs would not be rendered irrelevant in the growing mobile environment because these will play a big part in the convergence of devices.

“PCs will not be replaced despite the proliferation of mobile devices as it would be complementing these technologies in the convergence process,” said Judan.

According to online sitetechtarget.com, convergence is generally “coming together of two or more distinct entities or phenomena,” said the report.

“Convergence is increasingly prevalent in the IT world; in this context the term refers to the combination of two or more different technologies in a single device. Taking pictures with a cell phone and surfing the Web on a television are two of the most common examples of this trend,” saidtechtarget.com

According totechtarget.comconvergence refers to the joining of two or more distinct entities or phenomena. Furthermore, techtarget.comsaid convergence is getting pervasive in the information communications technology area. Based on this context, convergence is referred as the combination of two or more different technologies in a single device. Taking pictures with a cellular phone and surfing the Web on a television are two of the most common examples of this trend.

Judan said PC manufacturers have also adjusted to the demand of the market for convergence by developing devices that are leaner and more energy efficient in response to the call of making more green devices.

PC companies like Lenovo have introduced the all-in-one package which occupy 70-percent less desk space and only 150 watts of power compared with older models that consume 250 watts and have separate monitors and the central processing units,” he said.

Furthermore, Judan said Lenovo has also developed an excellent market segmentation that has addressed every requirement of each specific such as the enterprise, consumer, as well as small and medium enterprises.

Judan said Lenovo has introduced the nine all in ones program to cover the target segments.

He said innovation is going to be a key part of the roadmap to make PCs a major device in a converging world especially in the emerging markets. “Lenovo places utmost focus on the quality of innovation to achieve competitive differentiation and drive new market opportunities in emerging technologies such as mobile internet, digital home and cloud computing.”

According to online source reportlinker.com, personal computers will still be a hot item in developing countries. According to the reports, around 1.2 billion computers were in use worldwide at the end of 2008 with mobile PCs driving the current and future computer expansion although general PC growth is slowing.

In its online page, reportlinker said mobile and PC penetration levels are close to saturation in developed countries but a lot of opportunities are still abundant in emerging markets, where penetration levels are much lower.

“Emerging countries therefore present greater growth opportunities for information-technology companies and a number of them have already implemented strategies to exploit those markets,” the report said.
