East Visayas needs investors for tourism

DESPITE identifying six strategic development areas, tourism potentials in Eastern Visayas remain underdeveloped because of lack of investors. This was bared by Department of Trade and Industry Regional Director Cynthia R. Nierras during the recent First Investment Conference in Ormoc.

The development areas identified are: Leyte-Samar interface tour beginning in Tacloban crisscrossing to Sohoton Cave in Basey, Samar and then to Marabut, Samar which will take visitors to Biri, Capul, San Antonio and San Vicente Islands; Calicoan surfing area in Eastern Samar; Southern Leyte diving adventure; West Leyte Educational and Industrial Corridor from Palompon down to Matalom towns; and Carigara-Biliran Historical and Rural Life Clusters

The identified sites are waiting for investors including travel agencies that will develop package tours, transport facilities, good accommodation that will cater to various market niches and makers of small souvenirs.

Nierras considered the untapped potential as opportunities wasted considering that people from Cebu and Bohol, places considered “tourism superstars,” agree that Leyte and Samar have more attractions to offer.
