THE bulk of more than 100,000 depositors of the People’s Bank of Binmaley are at their wit’s end and are growing desperate by the minute as regulators schedule the sale of the bank’s remaining assets next month. This is the latest twist to a cruel turn of fate that started in early 2008 when the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp., (PDIC) with prior approval by the Monetary Board of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), ordered the bank and all its branches to shut down. |

THE peso rose on Monday to its strongest in nearly five weeks, advancing along with other high-yielding currencies as the US dollar remained under pressure amid growing hopes for a sustained global recovery from recession, traders said. Investor risk-taking continued, encouraged by better-than-forecast economic growth in Japan. Record high gold prices also hurt the dollar, they said. |
