THE operator of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is offering to build a cable-car system in the “Queen City of the South” to ease congestion on the roads leading to the air hub.
GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. Chief Executive Advisor Andrew Harrison said his group is “trying to meet” with officials of the local government units in Mactan and Cebu to thresh out the details of the cable-car proposal.
“The traffic situation in Cebu is becoming a problem. If we don’t solve it now, it will become bigger over time,” he said in an interview.
Harrison added the proposal involves the construction of a cable-car system that will run from the airport to up to 10 stops.
“The beauty is you only require the footings, as the issues of right-of- way are minimal,” he said. “We will start from Mactan to serve resorts and key interchange points. It can also be extended.”
Should the local governments agree to this proposal, it will take the company 12 to 14 months to finish the facility.
Harrison said it will be “much cheaper” for the commuters, and will help ease the congestion along major choke points in Cebu.
The company’s alternative to this, however, requires more work and will entail issues on right of way.
“We have another proposal, which is a battery-operated vehicle that carries six people without a driver. It will run through an elevated facility and will use sensors to guide the vehicle,” Harrison said.
This, however, will prove to be a challenge, because “it will need a lot more infrastructure for that road way.”
