HONESTLY, I don’t know what to make of this fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. Does it give boxing a shot in the arm? Does mixed martial arts (MMA) need more shots in the arm?
Mayweather is a smart businessman, he knows this fight is going to make him a lot of money, and it is a fight he thinks he’ll win easy.
McGregor, on the other hand, is perhaps the Floyd Mayweather Jr. of MMA. He sells his fights well with a lot of hype and flamboyance. He also tries to get under his opponent’s skin the same way he did with Jose Aldo and Nate Diaz. None of his pre-fight press conference antics will work on Mayweather, the man has seen it all and has fought them all.
Expect the weigh-in to be circus though, I expect the place to be packed to the rafters will a lot of rowdy Irish fans rooting for their boy to inflict the first “L” on Mayweather’s record.
MMA is different from boxing, and that’s an understatement. McGregor will be fighting a guy who practically breathes, eats and sleeps boxing.
How will McGregor counter Mayweather’s legendary shoulder roll? Does McGregor switch stances to keep Mayweather guessing and off balanced? Does Mayweather go after McGregor right away to test his punches?
I’m definitely sure this fight will break all records including the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. I think McGregor has to throw his punches from different angles to confuse Mayweather.
I also think McGregor needs to defend well if Mayweather decides to assert himself offensively early in the fight. McGregor also needs to have great footwork to beat Mayweather.
Whether the fight lasts long or somebody gets knocked out or suffers a cut and the doctor deems the fighter unfit to continue, I expect Mayweather to come out on top of this one.
I hope he doesn’t run around like a headless chicken. I hope he takes it to McGregor early to try and intimidate him due to his inexperience.
I don’t expect rust and inactivity on the part of Mayweather to be a factor. I think McGregor is way over his head on this one but he gets a lot of money no matter what happens.
If McGregor wins, does he staying in boxing? Will he get the “I’ll stay here for a while, I’m pretty good at this” moment to the chagrin of UFC President Dana White.
Are you ready boxing…and MMA fans?
