JUST when you thought that the Focus was set to evolve into the next generation, Ford conceived attention-grabbing, yet, smart enhancements, which have made the current model even more enticing.
At first glance, one will quickly notice how closely the new Focus resembles the smaller Fiesta. The result of adapting the signature trapezoidal-shaped honeycomb grill, together with slender headlamps, has resulted in a sporty front-end. Even the rear benefited from the new developments consisting of thinner tail lights, a redesigned tailgate and aerodynamic top-mounted spoiler. Altogether, the lower ground clearance and multispoked 17-inch alloy wheels create a wider stance.
This writer was able to drive the New Focus 1.5 EcoBoost Sport (five-door hatchback) variant coated in an eye-catching candy red tone. The exterior, which is not that different in terms of overall styling, only lacks several advanced illumination elements compared to the higher edition Sport +. It is only when you step inside the cabin that you start to notice the significant differences in terms of technology and features. However, manually controlled seats and the telescopic steering wheel are still wrapped in leather. The 4.2-inch infotainment system may be relatively small, but it effectively displays information on Bluetooth connectivity and collision alerts when backing up. For a hatchback, the cargo bay is surprisingly spacious enough to fit sizeable baggage and boxes. Nevertheless, whatever it lacks in ergonomics and interior aesthetics is compensated for by the car’s dynamics on the road.
Unquestionably, the new 1.5-liter EcoBoost powertrain is the key highlight of the New Focus. Not only is it more powerful than the old 2.0 naturally aspirated mill, but it is also more efficient and exhilarating. It is amazing how Ford’s EcoBoost forced induction system aid in the delivery of impressive output from such a small displacement. While low end is more than adequate, reaching mid-range is where the fun starts. The New Focus Sport is flexible. It is capable of both moderate pacing and an aggressive response for overtaking within limits. The up-to-date machine is coupled to a lightweight six-speed automatic transmission. Sport/manual mode shifting maximizes the power band and allows the engine to stay within its optimum torque span, avoiding any lag.
On the road, the suspension damping seems to lean toward the rigid side, yet, it remains remarkably smooth on level roads. As a result, there was hardly any feel of body roll during cornering, and the light electronically assisted steering system reacts and responds accordingly to inputs on the steering wheel. The torque vectoring control evidently engages on tight turns, maintaining the new Focus’s stability and control. A light pressure is all that’s needed to engage the brakes. During sudden application of the pedal, the antilock brake system works just fine. Other safety features and driver aids are dual front air bags, side air bags, electronic stability program, traction control, among others. This writer was also amazed with the vehicle’s superb noise, harshness and vibration reduction, which is comparable to that of an executive car—except for the machine’s grunt when it hits 3,500 rpm. Despite possessing a single-zone manual air-conditioner, the cooling system still managed to easily dissipate heat under the scorching sun.
The New Focus Sport is for car owners who prefer performance over convenience functions that are available at higher versions. After fitting a turbocharged motor into this well-loved segment figure, it will certainly just be a matter of time before the New Focus gets back in the game. Kaye Hart, managing director of Ford Philippines, expressed during the launch, “The New Ford Focus has been created with our customers and their needs in mind. The sophisticated, energized and progressive new Focus is loaded with the smartest and safest technologies in its segment, making it absolutely more efficient and cleverly designed, all within a more refined package.” Given its sophistication and athletic aura, this five-door hatchback is a certified head turner and will definitely touch every fanatic’s soft spot.
