The women’s national team targets a quarterfinals seat when it tackles Kazakhstan in the 19th Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship today at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan City.
The match is set at 5:30 p.m. with the Filipinas hoping to follow up on their 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Hong Kong on Wednesday to lead Pool A.
The Kazakhs, who has an average height of six feet led by captain Radmila Beresneva, are expected to use the advantage over the Filipinas, who has an average height of 5-foot-8 withJaja Santiago, who had 13 points against Hongkong, standing tall at 6-foot-5.
“We all know that they are tall but we are also big because we Filipinos have bigger hearts,” national team head coach Francis Vicente said.
Kazakh coach coach Vyacheslav Shapran saw how dangerous the Philippine side is when it toppled Hongkong on opening day.
Crowd-darling Alyssa Valdez was also impressive against Hongkong with 14 points on 13 hits.
“The win was for the country,” Valdez said.
Also scheduled today are the matches between Korea and Vietnam at 12:30 p.m. followed by the 3 p.m. battle between Thailand and Chinese Taipei in.
Matches are also played simultaneously at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex with Iran and Maldives taking the floor at 12:30 p.m., followed by the 3 p.m. duel between Australia and China and the Sri Lanka-New Zealand game at 5:30 p.m.
