IT may be the last edition, but this updated CR-Z still provides that enduring kind of impression. This country may not yet entirely accustomed to hybrid cars, much more to the concept behind it, but this sport compact is not all that. Honda built the CR-Z precisely with the intention to veer away from the common attributes correlated to hybrids. Indeed, experiencing this coupe ought to bring out that excitement, thrill and surprise in driving. And be prepared for that instant celebrity-like attention whenever you drive this stunner around the Metro.
If attitude is one thing you don’t appreciate from anybody, well, with this car, it’s definitely an exception. The striking fascia is composed of razor-shape-looking LED headlamps with daylight running lights along with that pronounced black front grille and garnish. It gets that distinctive attention even from afar with aligned profiles on the bonnet. Its well-defined contours on the flanks complement the aerodynamic and lower roofline. As you scrutinize the rear end, it’s easy to assume that it’s a hatchback.
However, the way Honda positioned the third door as part of the roof and rear, suggests otherwise. Hence, it’s being promoted as a “sport hybrid coupe”. There’s also those spikey taillights and sexy rear bumper with the new rear diffuser garnish. Moreover, those fresh five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/455 series rubbers complement well with the low and wide-looking stance. With the frame’s two-toned pattern, plus the radiant Helios Yellow Pearl shade, it simply look fabulous.
Getting inside is where the pure joy of driving starts. Here, you’ll begin to realize where that sport coupe element is coming from. The cabin is deep-set and laid out more like a two-seater, despite the presence of the rear benches, which can be folded to provide more trunk space. And once settled on those bucket-type seats elegantly wrapped in combined leather and first-rate fabric materials, the excitement starts to raise. Not to mention the metal finish, black and orange interior motif that a provides a more energetic ambiance. True to the essence of cockpit view, all controls are clustered close to the helm and within reach. With one push of a button, the ignition quickly comes alive, and you’ll love how the instrument panel glows with spectrum lights. You’ll find the tablet-like touchscreen panel with Bluetooth connectivity functions equipped with navigation system, embedded on the center panel. There are even more convenient features to appreciate, such as the ambient and foot area light; audio controls in the steering wheel; glove compartment with cooling and illumination; and the soothing six-speaker sound system, among others. But, of course, the main highlight is the CR-Z’s binary powertrain. Under the hood is a Euro 4-compliant 1.5-liter four-cylinder, SOHC, i-VTEC petrol engine paired with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) Hybrid system (lithium-ion type battery). It delivers a combined 133hp at 6,600 rpm and 170 N-m of maximum torque beginning at the low-end range from the electric and up to 4,800 rpm from the engine alone. Those power ratings are more than sufficient to propel the car’s small and light frame. It’s quick to reach cruising speeds, much more when you play around the paddle shifters to manipulate the gears. You can reach the highway speed limits in no time. But brace yourself when you push that little S+ button in the steering wheel. Because once engaged, the meter indicator in the panel turns brightly red, and then a sudden surge of power kicks in, dispensing a burst of speed. Imagine like having your own Nitrous Oxide (NOS) system.
Meanwhile, the seven-speed CVT automatic transmission operates smoothly while it shifts gears seamlessly. Also, the final drive enables the engine to stay just below 2,000 rpm at 100 km/h. This promotes absolute fuel efficiency apart from the Econ button, which adjusts throttle response, gear shifting and even the aircon operation.
Despite the lower-ride height, this sport hybrid coupe is surprisingly well-made on leveled roads. Only during road imperfections when the minimal tire rebounds occurs—this was understandable coming from the low-series tires. The noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) insulation is also impressive, considering the deep-set cabin configuration. In fact, the drive from Alabang, Muntinlupa, to Subic, Olongapo, became more engaging and pleasurable. Not even during urban gridlocks took away the coziness inside; while people around can’t help but stare at this gorgeous machine. And as expected, the CR-Z was remarkably nimble and easy to maneuver. There’s sufficient turning feedback on every bends, giving you ease of control. Likewise, the electronic power-assisted steering system was completely stable on high-speed limits.
Bundled with numerous protection elements, you’ll have full confidence while driving. For one, the frame construction is fortified, which absorbs the force of impact during collisions. Also, there’s the vehicle stability assist to avoid over- and understeers, hill start assist and airbags everywhere. Oh, there’s multiview rear camera with guidelines, too. As for steadfast stopping force, this CRZ is equipped with antilock braking system and electronic brake distribution. The Final Edition CR-Z Hybrid IMA Navi is priced at P1.535 million.
