DE LA SALLE and Ateneo de Manila scored separate wins against lowly teams to maintain their share of the second spot in the Season 79 University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.
The defending champion La Salle made a quick work of the young Adamson University in three sets, 25-12, 25-16, 25-15, while Ateneo trounced University of the East (UE) also in straight sets, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21. The two squads improved to 4-1 win-loss records.
Kim Dy of the Lady Spikers scattered 10 spikes, three service aces and a pair of blocks. Fil-Nigerian middle blocker Aduke Ogunsanya scored her second straight 11-point output, while last season’s Best Blocker Majoy Baron added eight markers.
La Salle has won back-to-back games since its first lost to undefeated league leader University of the Philippines last week.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles were pushed to the limits by the Lady Warriors in the second and third sets before fending off any resistance to tally their third-straight victory.
“UE could beat any team if they won’t play their best,” said Assistant Coach Sherwin Meneses, who is speaking in behalf of Thai Head Coach Tai Bundit.
Michelle Morente led the way for the Lady Eagles with 13 points built on 10 attacks, including three service aces and nine digs. Bea De Leon chipped in 11 hits, while skipper Jia Morado had another impressive game with 35 excellent sets and six points.
