DAVAO CITY—Compostela Valley province has tapped select elementary-school teachers and provincial high-school scholars to turn English remedial classes into a fun reading experience for primary-school students.
The province has selected 134 elementary-school reading teachers from the 11 towns and 268 high-school scholars for the province’s summer remedial-reading program.
Senior Board Member and Committee on Education and Information Technology Chairman Tyron Uy said the 134 teachers were selected from 67 public schools in Compostela Valley and underwent a two-day training on April 13 and 14 to prepare themselves for the “Summer Big Brother [SBB] Reading is Fun, Season 2.”
The 268 students were recipients of the Comval Scholarship Program and the other youth leader-volunteers also underwent a three-day training organized by the province.
“They would help teachers handle the class, make instructional materials and other fun activities to make learning enjoyable for the pupils. Each class would have an average of 15 pupils,” the provincial information office said.
The province has initiated the Kalinga sa Kabataan-Bayanihan Para sa Karunungan (KK-BPSK) program of the provincial government.
This is a 15-day English remedial-reading project which aims to improve the reading skills targeting incoming Grades 3 and 4 pupils identified as nonreaders.
The provincial government would also seek the support of barangay officials, parents and other local partners.
Twenty-three companies and establishments have pledged their support to the program this summer. Their contribution would provide “for workbooks, instructional materials and other expenses incurred for the remedial-reading activities, as well as incentives recognizing schools having good performance in the SBB implementation,” the information office said.
