A hairstylist once told me never to settle for hair color that’s safe because looking “normal” didn’t suit me. So when she was doing my hair, it was bleached and colored blue and purple one time and even red and dark violet. She also once gave me dark roots and ash-blonde tips. All that is behind me now and although my hair color (usually done at Salon Beauvoir), a constant brownish-auburn, is still bold by typical standards, it isn’t something that would merit a second glance. Bright and bold hair colors, in my opinion, are best left to younger people.
Young mom, model and blogger Jackie Go is one of those women who can get away with red hair and still look classy. By red, I don’t mean auburn. I mean, flaming red. I know Jackie because I see her at events and we follow each other on Instagram and I have the impression that she is a bit shy so the choice of hair color was somewhat surprising.
“I grew up very awkward, so hair color wasn’t really something I considered back then. I’ve been getting a lot of compliments ever since I started sporting red hair, and it’s something that gives me fulfillment because I own it more than it owns me,” said the wife and mother of two at Watsons Hair Affair, which was held at The Block, SM North Edsa.
The event, which featured the trendiest hair colors and styles, served to showcase Watsons’s wide array of coloring and styling products. I get my mom’s Revlon hair color at the store. I also bought my daughter’s Babyliss hair-styling tool there.
Watsons Hair Affair was an event to celebrate style transformations.
“Even my daughter’s classmates call me ‘The Little Mermaid’ whenever I pick her up from school because they see me as someone who’s very confident,” Jackie said.
Kim Reyes Palanca, a former beauty editor who is now a columnist, also believes in the power of transformation. I also see Kim at beauty events and I have always admired her beautiful healthy hair.
The young mom isn’t a stranger to frequent color changes. Like me, writing about beauty has given her the opportunity to transform her look via color. But she has since found a shade of brown that works best for her.
“I’ve tried almost every color in the lot…but now I feel very at home with this kind of brown. It’s classy, it’s easier for me to edit it, and I feel like finally, I can be myself. I’m more comfortable with my own skin…and it’s not too crazy for the husband,” Kim said.
The thing with hair color is that you really have to take care of it. I never used hair conditioner until I got my first hair color. Bleaching was another story. Bleached hair needs special care because it can become dry and brittle so I would apply a pre-shampoo product, wash my hair and condition and apply a leave-in cream or oil.
The great thing is that even if it becomes damaged due to overprocessing (just like mine did), hair grows back. So you just have to take care of it and wait.
