A seafarer who was no longer deployed back to work may be entitled to total and permanent disability benefits due to an illness he suffered while on board the vessel.
There are thousands of years that separate Herodotus, the so-called “Father of History,” and Dinah Roma, this poet who dares to announce that what she is doing is history. But if we go by the Western standard of Herodotus, we are introduced to a man who never believed we should believe what he wrote or documented. Throughout his career, it is said, Herodotus continued to favor the Ionian definition of history as one that means “research.”
Not all mothers deserve to be one. Motherhood is one of the most complex and challenging roles a woman could ever choose. After the painful process of childbirth comes the lifetime role of a nurturer, comforter, value-shaper, teacher and model of how life should be lived and led. She has to be the cornucopia of love and security for her offspring—and that role does not have a deadline.
For the fifth straight time, the Philippines is taking part in the La Biennale Di Venezia or the Venice Biennale. Now in its 60th year, the Venice Biennale is arguably the most prestigious and famous international art festival. A total of 88 nations will take part in the 2024 festival, including new participants Benin, Ethiopia, Timor Leste, Tanzania, Panama, and Senegal. The Philippines will once again have its own pavilion, which will be open for public viewing from April 20 to November 24, 2024.
I’M pretty sure everyone feels like they’ve been gradually frying like an egg in a pan over flames because of this seriously worsening heat index, which has already exceeded 40ºC in Metro Manila, according to our climate experts at Pagasa.
Andrew Scott made us believe in the unseen and impossible in 2023’s All of Us Strangers, where, as Adam, he goes back to his childhood home and finds his parents who passed on when he was young. There he confesses to his mom who he has become and cries to a father who was not there when he was alone, scared in the dark. But here in Ripley, Andres Scott, in the title role, makes us doubt everything—love, kindness, maleness. He makes killing a dreary art form, his insouciance ever apparent, the arrogance in check, his appearance as cool as the Brooks Brothers cotton shirts he has adopted as a uniform.
I SEEM to be forever enamored with my Toyota Altis. Even though I bought it in 2001, time has not extinguished the flame of love. That will never ever happen, I guess.
LAST week, I shared how we as parents should take that “big summer breath” before doing any summer school break planning. This time of rest, reflection and recreation is much needed and can energize us in planning a fun and meaningful summer for our kids. This week, let me focus on planning a play-based summer that is both fun and educational for your toddlers.
The classic form of Japanese theatre known as Kabuki began in 1603 as a female dance and singing ensemble. It was a common form of entertainment in Japanese red-light areas, especially in the Yoshiwara district of Edo.
EVERY year since I can remember, even before I was born, annual tax deadline has always been April 15. My father who is also a CPA had been in Public Practice since I was small. I can always see the frenzied pace in the office as the tax deadline nears. But as a young child I was not perturbed having got used to it since I am always at his office. I am looking forward more to the birthday celebration of my father whose birthday is on April 16—a day right after the April 15 deadline. So it is a double celebration of sorts – end of a tax season celebration and the birthday of my father.
The heavy traffic in Metro Manila again caught the eye of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last week. This time around, President Marcos offered long-term solutions that could ease the traffic jams and lead to a broader and more inclusive economic development of the nation.
IN many organizations, the capacity to influence others is often synonymous with holding a position of authority, particularly within traditional corporate settings where hierarchy often outweighs actual competence. However, simply occupying a position does not guarantee effective leadership. True influence goes beyond titles and ranks. It stems from personal credibility, effective communication skills, and a genuine understanding of how people relate to one another. Influencing people without formal authority is not only possible but a reliable indication of effective leadership. If you want to influence people without formal authority, note that it is a gradual journey that demands persistence and patience.
YOU have to give it to Tiger Woods. Despite finishing last in the just-ended Masters, he still managed to put up a façade of tranquility, of firmness in spirit. Calm as a river that runs deep.
EVERY decision you make, from how you budget your paycheck to where you invest your savings, shapes your financial well-being. Yet, for many, navigating the intricate world of personal finance remains a daunting task. From government employees to stay-at-home moms and construction workers, I’ve had the honor of teaching financial literacy to a diverse array of individuals, and through these experiences, I’ve come to realize that financial knowledge is not just a privilege for the wealthy—it’s a fundamental necessity for all.
I’ve always loved reading. Novels, history books, magazines, and newspapers of course (4 newspapers are delivered to me at 8 am daily—and I love it!) Reading has shaped the way I think and see the world in ways I cannot even fathom.
For most taxpayers, the deadline for filing the Annual Income Tax Returns (AITR) was yesterday (April 15). It is at this moment that a decision to either refund or carry over the excess withholding tax credits must be made. The Supreme Court in one case ruled that both options are irrevocable. But in a recent case, the SC clarified that only one of the options is irrevocable.
Three weeks from now two events will take place. They are not connected but it is interesting. Vladimir Putin’s next presidential inauguration is set for May 7, 2024. In addition, there will be another minor peak in Wave 935 of the Economic Confidence Model, which incidentally began on January 18, 2020.
Turning 83 this year, thespian Noel Trinidad always looks forward to going to the movie set of every new project.
“The sun just touched the morning; the morning, happy thing, supposed that he had come to dwell, and life would be all spring.”—Emily Dickinson
THE term “techco” is a relatively new buzzword that has emerged to describe the transformation of traditional telecommunications companies (telcos) into more technology-focused and innovative businesses. This transformation is driven by the rapid pace of technological change and the increasing demand for digital services.
The escalating scuffle between the Philippines and China on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) with conflicting claims is an enigma in itself. With former President Rodrigo Duterte singing a different tune with that of the Chinese Embassy, it has become a “he said, they said” situation. China says “Ouch!,” asserting it was our country that provoked them, whereas the Philippines cries “Foul,” appearing as the perpetual “punching bag.” China says the conduct of its Coast Guard vessels in blocking the resupply mission for BRP Sierra Madre were done in pursuit of China’s sovereignty, whereas the Philippines says the continued presence of Marines in Ayungin Shoal merely serves as an assertion of its rights already adjudicated in a UN Tribunal. Yet the China Coast Guard vessels are boulders, figuratively speaking, compared to “pebbles” of Philippine supply ships. In an abbreviated patois, it’s like saying “you bring food, I hit you with water”—via powerful water cannons and “you bring construction materials, I block you”—using colossal vessels!
Excitement fills the air as the country’s book-loving public eagerly awaits the opening of the Philippine Book Festival 2024 (PBF), the largest traveling book festival in the Philippines. This year, it will take place from April 25 to 28, 2024, at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
FILIPINO beauty brand GRWM Cosmetics presented another mega collection, this time for summer, consisting of seven blushes, three highlighters, five bronzers, and three contour sticks. Everything is in stick form or should I say “Stix” as the products in the Seaside Glam Collection are called “Glam & Go Stix.” Each product retails for P449
MAKING luxury accessible to more Filipinos has proven to be quite a lucrative venture for vlogger/teacher Christian Carlos. His swanky store, Japan Luxury by Christian Carlos (JLCC), sells vintage bags from Chanel, Hermes and Louis Vuitton, among many others.
AS PR pros, getting the work done depends as much on one’s likability as much as experience, skills, and of course, connections. In an article in Inc. com. Scott Mautz has observed that “over my 30-year career, I’ve seen that likable people who are easy, fun to work with have far more successful careers than curmudgeons.”
IT took a while but the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has finally come out with a decision that slapped P560 million in fines to officials of Abra Mining and Industrial Corp. (AR) and others for the sale in the stock market of unregistered and unlisted shares worth P1.6 billion.
UNDER its “Board and Executive Leadership” monthly learning series, the Philippine Council of Associations and Association Executives (PCAAE) recently held a webinar on “Leadership Elevated: Transforming Managers into Visionary Leaders,” conducted by Dr. Celia Chomón Zamora, CAE and director of the Professional Learning and Certification for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
