CARITAS Manila sent help for families displaced by ongoing fighting between government forces and a local terrorist group in Marawi City.
The lead social services and development program of the Archdiocese of Manila sent P500,000 in cash and 100 cavans of rice as initial help to the residents affected by the crisis in Marawi City.
In an interview over Church-run Radio Veritas, the Prelate of Marawi, Most Rev. Edwin dela Peña, DD, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the help being sent to his kababayan.
“Nagpapasalamat po kami sa inyong maagap na pagtugon sa pangangailangan ng ating mga evacuees, at talagang kailangang kailangan nila ang inyong tulong at ang patuloy ninyong pagpaparating at paghahatid ng tulong para sa kanila,” the prelate said.
On May 23, the residents of Marawi City were shaken by explosions and gunshots when the fighting erupted between the military and local terrorist groups. Fires also raged, affecting a church, two schools and the city jail. The electricity supply was also cut off. Residents have been taking refuge at different evacuation centers in Iligan City and in nearby towns. The violence prompted President Duterte to declare all of Mindanao under martial law for 60 days.
Caritas Manila and Veritas 846 Radio Totoo are asking for prayers for divine protection and for the help we can offer to our kababayan who were affected by the clashes between the military and the local terrorists, and are moving away from the fighting in Marawi City. Cash, as well as donations in kind, such as food items (halal), hygiene kits, water and blankets are accepted.
