SWISS cable manufacturer Datwyler Cabling Solutions Inc. (DCSI) suggested replacing cabling would increase the speed of the Internet in the Philippines.
DCSI Country Manager Glenn Go said as the Philippines is the second slowest when it comes to Internet speed, something has to give.
“We are not proud of this. We want to improve this,” Go said. According to him, cables installed in the country are now old, and the reason the Philippines has slow Internet speed. “We have a problem in using the same infrastructure, and that’s the cable. The cables installed when I was still studying, when I was still 19, are the same cables we’re using right now.” He added that the Internet speed when he was still studying was roughly 15 kilobytes per second.
Now, we all have these smartphones with many applications and, yet, the cable installed 10 years or 25 years ago “is still the same” cable where these run, Go said. Go said the Philippines should not take the condition of telecommunications cables for granted.
I thought (cables are unimportant because) it’s just passive, but it’s been shown that cables are important in telecommunications. “[Cabling] will define our future.”
