GENERAL SANTOS City—Jade Bornea booked a unanimous decision victory over Cebu’s Raul Yu to capture the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Youth super-flyweight crown on Sunday night at the Lagao Gym here.
A youth gold medalist in the Asian Boxing Confederation Championship in 2013, Bornea earned the nod of the two judges in the 10-round bout—97-93 and 98-92—and improved his record to seven wins, including four knockouts, with no loss.
Bornea was so impressive against the Cebuano as he flashed the form that made him a promising amateur in the main event of the Sanman Boxing promotion “Rise of Champions” which was witnessed by a raucous crowd.
“This was a great win for me especially that I fought in front of my townmates,” Bornea, one of Sanman’s rising stars, said.
The 21-year-old Bornea sustained a cut in his right eyebrow after a series of solid exchanges in the fifth round, but that did not stop him to neutralize his gutsy foe who fights for Ala Promotions.
Yu, who fell to 9-2 won-lost, looked to have the upperhand in the third and seventh rounds, but Bornea already piled points with jabs and uppercuts.
Eden Sonsona, meanwhile, scored a first-round technical knockout win over Jovanny Rota in the co-main event to grab the World Boxing Federation International super-featherweight title.
Sonsona, a former bantamweight world title contender, landed vicious 1-2 combinations that dropped Rota unconscious on the canvass for several minutes.
In the other bouts, Randy Petalcorin won via a seventh-round TKO over Mark Florida, Ben Manangquil booked a unanimous decision victory over Glenn Porras and Lolito Sonsona registerrd another unanimous win over Renren Tesorio.
