NOW on its third edition, the 2016 Bataan Freedom Run kicks off on April 10, with portion of the proceeds going directly to the restoration of World War II historical markers, including the iconic “Death March” route.
In a race that commemorates the sacrifices of the country’s war veterans, the Bataan Freedom Run—presented by Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) and copresented by History Channel and the provincial government of Bataan—will feature a grueling 68.9-kilometer ultramarathon for professional runners, while running enthusiasts can join the 10-km and 5-km class.
The freedom run will also showcase the 1-km fun run for kids or families, and the 500-meter pet race.
“It’s one of those few race events that cater to a wide spectrum of runners, from the serious ultramarathoners to the enthusiasts, and even kids and pets. Our aim is to bring the whole family together in a meaningful event,” said Mike Villa-Real, head of Veteran Bank’s Corporate and Consumer Relations Division, during the press launching on Thursday in Kamuning Bakery Café.
“To remember their hardships, we want to give back to the veterans in a way that the present Filipinos can reminisce history,” Villa-Real added.
The race, which tapped Without Limits as race consultants, is one of the key events of the 2016 Philippine Veteran’s Week, which falls on April 9, the 74th anniversary of the Bataan Death March.
Since 2014 the run is being held in honor of the thousands of Filipino and American veterans who died and endured the Death March. The PVB plans to prepare a bigger and better race for the diamond anniversary of the Fall of Bataan next year.
All winners will receive cash prizes and medals, while finishers of the ultramarathon will each get a medal for completing the race. For more information, visit the Bataan Freedom Run Facebook page or contact (02) 263-7768.
