CELEBRATING the Chinese New Year is akin to recognizing the tremendous contribution of the Chinese to Filipino history and culture. After all, even before the Spanish colonizers rediscovered the Philippines in 1571, the Filipinos and the Chinese had already coexisted as early as 9th century A.D. The flourishing barter trade done initially on Chinese sampans had led to the establishment of permanent trade routes and Chinese settlements in Luzon and in the Visayas. Eventually, the Chinese migrants, who were mostly males, intermarried the local women, and this introduced a lot of Chinese aspects into the Filipino way of life.
