DAVAO CITY—A seaport control tower and a warehouse complex, complete with a backup power- generating unit, are the key features of a modern shipping-port complex in Parang town in Maguindanao province, soon the main docking port that government planners of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) want to transform into a fully operational special economic zone.
The ARMM already set aside P100 million for the development of the Polloc Free Port. The clearing of the port complex and its periphery from so-called informal settlers has already been done, according to Port Manager Mimbalawag Mangutara.
The development plan requires the construction of a separate building to house the power generator, and the repair and maintenance area. A perimeter fence would secure the facility.
“We need to upgrade the Polloc port and make it attractive to the booming business climate in the ARMM, where local and foreign investments will generate income and jobs for our constituents,” Mangutara said.
Mangutara said a number of investors already signified interest in putting up their business in Polloc once its development is complete.
He said they have already started talks to facilitate the transfer of around 500 families to a 10.9-hectare lot procured by the ARMM government. The dialogue had involved port officials, local government officials and leaders of the informal setters.
Mangutara assured the settlers that basic amenities like water and electricity will be provided at the proposed relocation site.
“We appeal to everyone to support these initiatives to revive the once-thriving economy here in Polloc,” he said.
