CONSIDERED by International Data Corp. (IDC) as the world’s fourth largest computer manufacturer, Acer Inc. bared devices in a bid to catch up with rivals dominating the smartphone and tablet markets.
Acer is touting its Liquid Jade and Liquid X1 smartphones as the Philippines is now considered by IDC as having pulled ahead of Vietnam to become the third largest smartphone market in Southeast Asia.
Cherry Mobile dominated the smartphone shipments to the Philippines last year with a 21.9-percent market share. Japan’s Kyocera Corp.’s Torque closed the top 5 vendors in smartphone shipments. Acer may be included among other vendors with a total 42.3-percent market share.
Acer is touting its Liquid Jade smartphone as having a 5-inch high-definition HD display with in-plane switching display technology. It has a 7.5-millimeter form factor and curved glass design. The smartphone has a 13-megapixel (MP) F1.8 camera.
On the other hand, Acer touts its X1 smartphone as having an octa-core processor and a long-term evolution connectivity. The company said the unit has a 5.7-inch high-definition screen. Like the Jade, it also has a 13MP F1.8 camera.
On the other hand, Acer is touting its Iconia Tab 8 Full High-Definition (FHD) and Iconia Tab 10 FHD as IDC said worldwide tablet shipments recorded in the fourth quarter of last year, a year-over-year decline for the first time since the market’s inception in 2010.
“The tablet market is still very top heavy in the sense that it relies mostly on Apple and Samsung to carry the market forward each year,” Jitesh Ubrani, IDC senior research analyst, was quoted as saying in a statement. Acer aims to play with these big boys in the market with its tablets’ technology surround sounds.
The company is putting first the Tab 8’s Intel Atom processor and power—running up to 7.5 hours on battery. On the other hand, Acer is touting its Tab 10’s branded glass surface with anti-fingerprint coating and an aluminum rear cover.
