THE 2015 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ creates the kind of encounter that denotes a different level of driving pleasure. Owing to its refined styling and dynamic tuning, Chevrolet Philippines’s entry in the midsize-sedan segment makes it a force to be reckoned with.
Aside from its aesthetic appeal, the lustrous exterior exudes aerodynamic attributes that resist air drag. The fascia features a pronounced chrome-accented dual-port grille highlighting the bowtie logo. In addition, the projector-type high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, fog lamps and sword blade-shaped bumper chins complete the whole front package. At the rear, the ducktail-shaped upper portion of the trunk and dual-exhaust tail pipes convey sportiness together with the Camaro-inspired tail lamps.
Unlocking is effortless with the keyless-access system with a quick touch to the door handle.
Undeniably, Chevrolet wanted embodiments of its icons in the Malibu. With the Corvette-style dual-cockpit design, the Malibu is endowed with an elegant, yet driver-oriented layout, with controls embedded in the steering wheel and an ignition start/stop button. The chrome accents complement the appealing contours that stretch to the doors sidings. Analog gauges vividly illuminate the display, as well as the informative center screen. Leather-wrapped seats are sport-sculpted and provide a perfect fit, thanks to the multidirectional, eight-way power adjustments, including lumbar support. The center console, which features a 7-inch color LCD MyLink System, serves as the main access to audio, telephony and GPS navigation with stunning high-definition display. Pop the screen panel, and there’s an instant access to extra compartment. Parking in reverse is an easy task with the built-in camera display with markings and pattern—which follows steering movement—for distance and alignment. The expansive interior easily transforms into a cabin with a placid atmosphere, thanks to the ambient blue lighting and mood illumination emanating from the control dials.
Driving the Malibu clearly demonstrated its luxury and comfort elements. Keeping in mind that it was not built for spirited driving, the 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Ecotec engine, coupled to six-speed AT with active select, is a smooth operator in every aspect.
With adequate torque from the low end up to midrange, it delivers seamless momentum on highways and ascents.
The manual mode became vital when clutching within the power band for overtaking and engine braking. Even while the drive-by-wire operated, shifting was discreet. The noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) insulation was so impressive that it adds up to the pampering experience—with the exception of minimal engine grunt approaching 4,000 rpm.
Combined front MacPherson struts and rear multilink suspension were tuned for a soft ride. However, there were noticeable tire rebounds on uneven roads due to the 225/45 tire series mounted on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Cruising on leveled roads, however, was so relaxing. The hydraulic power steering exhibited satisfactory responsiveness and feedback.
The extreme humidity was no match for the electronic climate control. Even at a complete standstill, the cabin was so cool that this writer totally forgot that it was the hottest time of the year. This created a blissful experience while listening to soothing music from the crisp audio quality. Noteworthy provisions are the cup/bottle holders in each door and two rubberized holders in the center console with sliding rubberized cover.
Driver aids include a four-way antilock braking system (ABS), brake assist and electronic brake distribution (EBD). Other reliable safety features are traction control, electronic stability control, six airbags (dual front and side curtains), auto-dimming rearview mirror and seat-belt reminder. What got the most attention of this writer were the tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and foolproof electronic park brake switch.
Compared to the other top-of-the-line executive sedans which are more passenger-oriented, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ is ideal for car owners who are inclined to experience premium driving indulgence. Considerably, it’s also for enthusiasts in search of an upgrade from top variant compact sedans in favor of better styling, amenities, space and execution.
