WHEN it comes to versatility for numerous applications, the compact crossover is one of the sought-after vehicles that falls in that criteria. Combining the ease of driving a sedan and the solid functionality of sport-utility vehicles is the perfect daily driver, whether in the urban setup or even countryside trips. But in the case of Mazda CX-5 AWD SKY-D, it went beyond the essentials of combined form and function with its newly introduced diesel-powered version.
One look is all it takes to appreciate its stunning exterior in Soul Red shade. Indeed, it’s amazing how Mazda’s KODO design language, in spite of the front end close resemblance across the board, managed to create that character distinctions among the different models, even with minimal variations. Exterior-wise, this diesel version is no different from its top spec petrol sibling. From the signature fascia layout with keen-looking adaptive LED headlamps, character lines on the bonnet, to the distinctive silhouettes on the flanks extending to the rear end that matches the willowy taillights. If not for the visible front-mount intercooler and the rear badge, any unsuspecting motorist won’t even tell the difference at all. Nevertheless, the design concept that catches the eye and moves the soul is definitely apparent. And those matte black trims surrounding the bottom part of the panels complemented the two-toned finished, 19-inch rollers and 225/55 series tires for that robust posture.
Once inside, you’ll be greeted with a utilitarian yet elegant layout emanating from a monochromatic and European-inspired motif with brushed metal trims and borders. With eight-way power seat adjustments, tilting and telescopic helm, finding the preferred driving position was easy. More so, all seats are not only comfy and leather-wrapped, but also well-padded with side bolsters for support. Unlike the typical heads-up position, the 7-inch touchscreen operated infotainment is embedded in the dashboard but features the same various audio functions and connectivity. In addition, there’s a command control knob just below the shift handle that makes screen operation faster, easier and safer.
And, of course, the i-Stop, which feature promotes fuel efficiency by triggering a seamless mechanism that switches off the engine at every stop and resumes ignition faster than the initial start-up as soon as the brake pedal is released. But there’s a separate switch to disengage it if the driver prefers the motor running continuously.
Bearing the new Skyactiv-D powertrain, this version of CX-5 joins the Korean counterparts in the segment’s diesel-variant offering. By adapting a two-stage turbocharger, not only that the engine yields a massive 420 Nm of maximum torque, it also provides a wider and linear power band. As a result, not even the demand and weight of the all-wheel-drive (AWD) system created any burden as the acceleration was simply instantaneous. Furthermore, the smooth shifting six-speed Skactiv-drive automatic transmission aided in the delivery with swift gear changes in sync with the throttle opting for the manual mode during engine braking alone.
Aside from one of the most advanced engines in the world, it’s EURO 6-compliant and currently holds the lowest compression ratio globally at 14:1 to achieve lower emission and high combustion efficiency. In fact, even though the demo unit already clocked over 5,000 kilometers from numerous test drives, there were hardly any telltale signs from the exhaust pipes. It’s remarkably clean, odorless and smokeless.
On the road, the level of ride definitely leans toward the comfort side. Logically, there was negligible amount of rebounds coming from the rear multilink beam suspension for utility purposes. But still, a premium sedan-like level of coziness was noticeable on levelled roads. Moreover, the noise, vibration and harshness suppression provided tranquility inside the cabin, making the crisp sound quality from nine-speaker Bose audio setup even more soothing. Meanwhile, navigating through winding roads with tight curves is where you’ll appreciate the AWD function of the vehicle. With all four wheels providing full traction and backed by electronic power steering, it manifested excellent handling and control on every turn with good steering feedback.
Another interesting feature is the lane departure warning sensor that actively alerts the driver. Other reliable safety provisions are the six air bags, four-wheel anti-lock braking (with electronic brake distribution), dynamic stability control and traction control, among others.
The CX-5 AWD Sky-D edition is Mazda’s entry to the expanding diesel-propelled crossovers promoting more output yet fuel efficient. Then again, the Skyactiv-D technology proved to be more than just providing unyielding delivery but also capable to be environment friendly. Overall, the benefits you get from its price increment are far beyond your expectations. Imagine the solid built of a top spec CX-5, with all the bells and whistles, now made even better by fitting a powertrain that may well be considered as a modern-day marvel on diesel technology.
